Deacon Dwight Johnson, a retired General Motors executive and dedicated deacon with the Archdiocese of New Orleans, has been a pillar in the communities he has served for over 50 years. After retiring from a successful 30-year career in accounting at GM, Dwight continued his service journey by actively engaging in various diaconate efforts across Louisiana. He administered parishes in New Orleans and Springhill and later in St. Tammany Parish, contributing significantly to Our Lady of the Lake, Mary Queen of Peace, and St. Anselm parishes alongside his close friend and fellow deacon, Joe Lazo.
The unexpected passing of Deacon Lazo marked a turning point for Dwight. He then partnered with Marvin Halbrook and joined what was then Covington Food Bank, dedicating himself to stabilizing the organization during a challenging transitional period. Over 14 months, Dwight collaborated closely with the staff and volunteers, leveraging his accounting expertise and leadership skills honed at GM to reorganize the food bank's operations and fiscal management.
As executive director, Dwight's impact was multifaceted. He not only streamlined the organization's financial systems but also oversaw the operations of its dental clinic. This included the challenging task of recruiting volunteer dentists. Working alongside Sam and Jackie Catalanotto in the warehouse and distribution operations, Dwight played a crucial role in ensuring the food bank's stability and efficiency. Under his guidance, the organization improved its ability to meet community needs, from providing inconsistent food supplies to offering nutritionally balanced meals.
Reflecting on the past, Dwight, now ninety-one, recently toured the current Northshore Food Bank facility, visibly moved by its growth and development. As he walked through the facility, he remarked with a sense of pride and accomplishment, "This is eye-opening. The need is still in this community, and the organization has evolved so much to address it." He added with a forward-looking perspective, "I am confident that this facility will ensure the continuing work of the food bank to service the needs of the residents of St. Tammany Parish and the Northshore for years to come, faithfully meeting the mission since its initial founding. I am proud to see what Northshore Food Bank has accomplished and excited for its future impact."
