Northshore Food Bank's Kids Weekend Food Program helps address food insecurity among elementary school children in St. Tammany Parish. Each week during the school year, participating students receive supplemental food packs to take home, ensuring they have access to nutritious meals over the weekend.
For the 2024-2025 school year, the program will serve seven Title 1 elementary schools: Alton, Brock, Chahta-Ima, EE Lyon, Pine View, Riverside, and Whispering Forest. It also continues at the Boys & Girls Club in Covington.
This program runs on grants, sponsorships, and donations. Key funding comes from Baptist Community Ministries, along with support from St. Tammany Parish Government, Northshore Community Foundation, Church of the King, Walmart, Home Bank, Fore! Foundation, Whole Foods, CLECO, and generous community donations.
With 29 Title 1 schools in St. Tammany, the need is great. As Dr. Schanette Hebert, Principal of Alton Elementary, says, “Our students and parents are so grateful for this much-needed food program.”
